The first contact
Counselling usually starts with a brief phone call to set up the first assessment session. In this first phone call you can ascertain whether suitable mutually convenient times can be arranged etc. for therapy.
Assessment session
Counselling always starts with a first “assessment session”. This is a little bit longer than the usual sessions – the assessment session is usually 60 minutes. In this Toni will ask you a lot of questions about your life now, and in the past, including relationships, work and social life, health issues, how you are feeling and thinking. She may give you some short tests to complete. This is to give her an understanding of you and your problems and enable her to make some decisions about what sort of counselling may best enable you to meet your goals. You can ask what questions you have about therapy. At the end of this first session she will give you some idea of how long she thinks your therapy will take (this an only be an approximation and may change if new material or client goals are introduced into the work). After this session you may take time to decide whether you would like to continue with your therapy or not. You can then contact Toni and make further appointments if you decide to continue.
